May is National Foster Care Month, a time set aside to recognize the more than 365,000 children and youth in the foster care system across the United States. It’s also a time to honor the foster parents, caregivers, and professionals who show up every day to support these kids and help them find stability, connection, and, ultimately, a place to land during a very difficult time in their lives.
At TMP, we would like to say a special thank you to the caregivers and caseworkers who help us add mentees to our projects and who make the long drives to ensure each mentee can participate! We also want to honor all of our leads and mentors who put in the extra work, taking their weekends off, jumping through all of the TMP hoops to walk alongside these children on the water!
But the most important part of National Foster Care Awareness is honoring the kids who are in foster care, uncertain of where they will be next, navigating school life and unpredictability. with an amount of grit and grace that most of us adults could hardly muster.
We are honored to get to hang out with this population and be a small part of their journey towards healing. Seeing what fly fishing physiologically does to calm a troubled mind, and how a fish can give a kid a reason to smile who hasn’t had many reasons to smile this year, is truly a privilege.
For this month especially, consider finding out how you can support your local TMP, CASA, Caseworkers, and local youth in foster care!
Also, for donors that give over $25 this month to TMP, our friends with Got Fishing and Adamsbuilt will give a great discount on their fly fishing gear!! Donate here and get the discount code! THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR VILLAGE!
