At the 31st Annual Conference, Fostering Enhanced Childhood Experiences, the Connecticut Alliance of Foster and Adoptive Families (CAFAF) honored Mark Alpert with the statewide Community Partner Award in recognition of his outstanding volunteer leadership as lead mentor for The Mayfly Project.

The nomination was submitted by CAFAF Outreach Coordinator Krystal Hernandez, Outreach Coordinator, in recognition of The Mayfly Project’s continued dedication, impact, and commitment to supporting older youth in foster care.

“CAFAF is proud to partner with The Mayfly Project on collaborative events that expand opportunities for the youth and families they serve, bringing enriching outdoor experiences directly to our community.” Hernandez shared. “These shared efforts help strengthen engagement, build trust, and create meaningful moments for youth in foster care. We are especially grateful for Hartford Lead Mentor Mark Alpert, whose devotion, passion, and commitment to the youth he serves make a lasting impact. We love working with him and deeply value the energy and care he brings to every partnership and event.”

Among the collaborative programs Mark organized was a joint community event with CAFAF featuring casting lessons, fly-tying instruction, knot-tying demonstrations, and hands-on crafts that highlighted the wide range of educational experiences offered through The Mayfly Project. The Hartford Mayfly Project also participated in a CAFAF fall Trunk or Treat event designed to introduce families to the organization and recruit mentees for the current season. Mark actively connects with state agencies and community partners to expand awareness of The Mayfly Project and the opportunities it provides for youth and families.

This season, Mark leads a team of 14 mentors serving eight mentees, while coordinating five exceptional fly-fishing outings across Connecticut’s ponds, lakes, and rivers. Through fly-fishing mentorship, participating youth gain confidence, resilience, and meaningful connections with caring adults. The Mayfly Project’s unique hands-on programming creates lasting memories while fostering life skills, community, and a powerful sense of belonging.
