Brews, the Outdoors, and Big Hearts: How Nocterra Brewing Boosted The Mayfly Project–Columbus

Fly fishing met fundraising in one of the most uplifting outdoor partnerships we’ve experienced. This isn’t just a story about raising money—it’s about connection, creativity, and showing up for youth in foster care.

A Fortunate Partnership: Nocterra’s Take-a-Hike Campaign

For several years, Nocterra Brewing Company in Powell, Ohio had their Take-a-Hike fundraiser—spotlighting a different nonprofit each month and donating a portion of proceeds from every Take-a-Hike beer sold. Public Lands Fund even matched donations in past years, doubling the impact.

Here’s the best part: The Mayfly Project–Columbus didn’t have to pitch this opportunity. Thanks to an introduction by our local Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing lead, we connected with Lori Duncan, Nocterra’s co-owner and VP of Operations. After learning about our mission to mentor youth in foster care through fly fishing, they selected us as a monthly beneficiary. It’s a powerful reminder that when your mission resonates, support can come from unexpected places.

Getting Involved

Although we didn’t create the campaign, we were honored to participate. So, we hosted a Social Hour Fundraiser at Nocterra during our spotlight month. Local fly-fishing fans, curious newcomers, and supporters gathered to connect and learn about our work. Raffle prizes donated by local fly shops and businesses—ranging from gear to weekend getaways—created an energetic and inspiring night. It was more than fundraising; it was community-building.

Why It Matters

The donations and connections from the event will not only impact the lives of local youth in foster care, but it has forged a new partnership that will continue to develop TMP for years to come. We saw new faces, sparked new conversations, and added momentum to our mission. Sometimes, just sharing your story is all it takes.

A Message to Fellow TMP Projects

You don’t need to start from scratch. Look for local businesses—breweries, coffee shops, gyms, outdoor retailers—already invested in their communities. Start a conversation, share your mission, and be open to opportunities. If you’re selected for a fundraiser like this, make the most of it. Host a meetup, bring your team, and thank your partners.

Final Cast

We are incredibly grateful to Nocterra Brewing for their generosity and commitment to getting people outdoors while making a difference. Our experience proves that partnerships can be powerful—and often start with a single conversation.
