Support the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Project

The Harrisburg Chapter of The Mayfly Project is a non profit organization run by local volunteers to mentor young adults and children that are in the foster program. While teaching and mentoring these children there is more to it than just learning to fish. They are being given life lessons and tools to help them deal with the conditions that they have been placed in. Learning to fish will not only give them a connection to the world around them, it will also teach them how to see the world. This National Program strives to give them a way to deal with the stresses of life and an awareness that there are many ways to cope with how they are feeling. The use of an activity like fishing will not only give them an outlet but will also teach them about nature and the cycle of life. We as volunteers are pleased and hopeful that we can make a difference in their lives and give them hope and direction for their future.

Project Mentors

Greg Rhodes, Lead Mentor
Greg is so pleased that The Mayfly Project gives him the opportunity to combine his two passions…mentoring youth and fly fishing. A native of south central PA he lives in Camp Hill with his wife Monica, daughter Isabelle and numerous pets. Recently, Greg decided to retire as a land developer and home builder. Prior to his construction career Greg had guided 30 day wilderness trips with at risk youth for the Tresslercare Wilderness School in Boiling Springs, PA. He has returned to life on the trail 25 years later working for the same organization now called The Diakon Wilderness School. When not leading 30 day courses Greg, his wife Monica and dog Mimi Olive travel extensively…Greg always on the lookout for great trout water!
Todd Bowser, Co- Lead Mentor

A native son of York County, PA, Todd was raised by his hard-working parents and maternal grandparents. For him and his younger brother, Chad, no creek went uncrossed and no car went un-raced. Working beside his grandfather who was a concrete and block mason, Todd developed a love for hard work and craftsmanship, while his mom and grandmother made sure it was tempered with compassion and kindness. Involved in land acquisition, development and conservation, Todd still finds time to flyfish the many amazing streams in Pennsylvania and chase birds with his constant hunting companion, Lark.

Katie Bartling, Mentor

Katie studied environmental science and Landscape Architecture and works in academic research focused on water quality and stream health, macroinvertebrate communities and in-stream fish habitat. In a volunteer capacity, Katie helps out with research projects focused on shorebird health, horseshoe crab spawning, and owl migration, primarily in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Volunteering with the Mayfly Project has helped fulfill her passion for environmental education and engaging with her community to explore the natural world through fly fishing.

Mike Canarelli, Mentor

Mike’s fly fishing journey began at 14 in a Lancaster County farm pond, where he caught his first — and still largest — largemouth bass on a fly rod. His early days were spent fishing with his grandmother in Upstate NY, a bond that instilled a lifelong love for the sport. After moving to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Mike continued to pursue his passion for fishing. When he’s not working or guiding, you’ll find him enjoying the outdoors with his wife, Natalya, and their kids, Siena (5) and Harrison (3), on family adventures that include hiking, ATV riding, and, of course, fishing. Mike is the owner of WTM Digital, a digital marketing agency he started in high school when he was 16. As a licensed PA Guide, he finds immense satisfaction in sharing

Dan Drury, Mentor

Dan is an avid outdoorsman. He loves to fish, hunt, hike and paddle. He has been a professor at Gettysburg College for the last 25 years and looks forward to retirement in the near future. He lives in Camp Hill Pa with his wife Jill and enjoys spending time outdoors with his adult sons J.D. and Ben.

David Bernhardt, Mentor

David has lived in many parts of Pennsylvania and enjoyed many of its streams over the years. Growing up he enjoyed fishing with his grandfather, dad and many good friends along the way, and still looking for any spare time to get back out on the water. He is passionate about helping others and kids and is involved in helping those in need in ways beyond the stream, serving on the boards of the Children’s Home of York, Able Services, Leg Up Farm, and the Red Lion Educational Foundation. He lives in Red Lion with his wife and is enjoying seeing his own children blossom in the world.

Kerry Lanza, Mentor

Kerry lives in the Reading PA area with his wife Barbara. With grown children, they are currently enjoying being first time grandparents. He is currently winding down his career in the water treatment business and spending more time as an adjunct college professor.

Fly fishing has led Kerry into experiences and adventures that aren’t easily found anywhere else. Those rare moments on the water have inspired Kerry to give back by teaching and mentoring others and helping them discover their own fly-fishing transformative journeys in programs like Healing Waters and Casting for Recovery.

With a passion for fly-fishing he also enjoys hunting, camping, building wilderness skills, and just being outdoors.

Justyn DuSold, Mentor
Justyn is passionate about all things fly fishing! While a love for fishing began from a young age during excursions with his dad and grandpa, his first introduction to the magic of fly fishing was a class he took in college and he has been hooked ever since. He grew up in York, PA and currently hangs his hat in Hershey. As a medical student with an interest in pediatrics, he is passionate about education and caring for children from all walks of life. He enjoys teaching, introducing others to sport of fly fishing, and sharing meaningful experiences on the stream.
Ronald Crandall, Mentor

Ronald Crandall. A recent transplant from Colorado to Central Pennsylvania in 2024 Ronald is an avid fly fisherman for the past twenty years. Ronald has spent countless hours fly fishing and tying flies. He has been involved in his community volunteering as a Firefighter, Search and Research, as a Colorado Mounted Ranger and EMS First Responder with additional service as a Cub Scout leader.
Ronald strongly believes in giving back and supporting youth.

Seth Barton, Mentor
A Pennsylvania native, Seth grew up fly fishing the freestone and limestone streams of central Pennsylvania. Starting in his mid-teens, he developed a deep appreciation for the sport and conservation while exploring waters across the region. He particularly enjoys the quiet intimacy of small-stream fishing with dry flies, where patience meet peaceful surroundings.

Seth is passionate about sharing his knowledge of conservation and environmental stewardship on the water, and he is excited to bring that passion to his role as a mentor with the Mayfly Project.

Kaleigh Grim, Mentor
Most notably an explorer of terrestrial habitats, Kaleigh is excited to spend tim on the water. She works outdoors as a pest scout and regulator at tree farms and nurseries in southeastern PA, promoting the health of our forests and commerce of plants. She’s happy to call Pennsylvania home by way of Ohio, Kentucky, and Florida. She predetermined to learn fly fishing in retirement, but The Mayfly Project combines her love of working with kids with that goal! She’s involved in serving foster families through Keystone Family Alliance, and volunteers at church. She loves spending time with her husband, stepdaughters, and chocolate lab.
