By investing in programs that help youth find both confidence and solace in the outdoors, Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) Outdoor Equity Grants open new pathways for communities who have historically faced barriers to getting outside.

One of those programs is the Mayfly Project, a national nonprofit with chapters across the country — including a growing presence in Denver. Its mission is straightforward: to support youth in foster care through fly fishing, offering them time and space to simply be kids, learn new skills, and connect with mentors.

The Denver chapter was founded in 2017 by a Trout Unlimited chapter president who wanted to give youth in foster care a way to experience Colorado’s outdoors. Denver was chosen for its variety of nearby waters, strong base of dedicated fly fishers, and relatively easy access. What started with eight mentors has since grown to more than 40, serving about a dozen mentees each year.
