At the end of our program, I received a thank you note from my mentee. He enjoyed the time we spent together on the water and mentioned that ‘he didn’t know fishing could be so fun’! It was his first-time fishing and admitted that he considered fishing ‘boring’ and that he didn’t want to do it. His perspective changed after our time together on the water. We talked conservation and he jumped right in to help keep the lake clean. His favorite part, of course, was his ‘First catch’! The note included pictures of us and it filled me with happiness and a few of those ‘happy tears’!

Alan Hautly , LEAD MENTOR
I retired in 2019 after running our family business in St. Louis. Born and raised in Kirkwood, MO, I was taught to fish by my neighbor who bought me my first 3-piece bamboo cane pole (which I still own.) Have been fishing ever since, started fly fishing and tying (if you could call it that at the time) when I was an early teen. Have mostly bass fished my adult life until I retired and got back into fly fishing, and also fly tying. Joined Flyfishers at the Crossing, where I learned about TMP. I have enjoyed getting a fly rod back in my hand and look forward to helping as a Lead Mentor and giving back to the youth that need our assistance.

Her devotion for foster children and enthusiasm for teaching others about her most loved hobby makes her eager to be the lead mentor for the St. Louis project.

Iowa native, grew up fishing farm ponds and creeks as far back as he can remember and started traveling over to the driftless region to chase trout as soon as he could drive. Spent 10 years living in Hawaii and Puerto Rico so shifted over to bonefish, tarpon, and reef fish for awhile. Currently living outside of St Louis MO with his wife and two kids. Member of Flyfishers at the Crossing, Ozark Fly Fishers, and the Missouri Smallmouth Alliance. Active volunteer for Missouri Stream Team, the St Louis United Way, and Operation Food Search; also helping with Boy Scouts and St Louis youth rugby. Jim Craig, Mentor
My love of fishing began long before I discovered fly fishing 9 years ago. While fly fishing is now a major part of my life, teaching others—especially young people—to fish has been a lifelong commitment.
My enthusiasm for fly fishing is reflected in my volunteer work with Fly Fishers at the Crossing where I assist with an eight-hour classroom fly-fishing course. In addition, I lead students during their one-on-one guided day on the water, teaching them to apply the skills they have learned.
My dedication to teaching children to fish is evident in the fishing program I developed for a boys’ & girls’ summer camp in MI. 25 years ago, I created the curriculum and I have spent 2 weeks each summer teaching campers the fundamentals of fishing.
Ken Welter, Mentor
Born and raised in the Chicago area, I frequently fished the waters of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Canada. After a career as a manufacturer’s rep in the logistics industry, I retired at the end of 2025. In 2021, my wife and I relocated to the St. Louis area to be closer to our daughter and her family. In 2022, I began fly fishing after completing a course offered by the Flyfishers at the Crossing. Today, I am active in several volunteer organizations. I coordinate our group’s participation with the Ronald McDonald House, where we prepare meals for families whose children are receiving medical treatment. I am also involved with Missouri Stream Team, Casting for Recovery, and Scouting events
