“Introducing children to the art of fly fishing is not really about the fish we catch. It’s about helping them, as it helps so many of us, by providing an escape, promoting character, building relationships, and connecting us with nature.”

Brian McGrath, Lead Mentor

I grew up in Southern California ocean fishing the jetties, and surf beginning at age 6. I loved it.  Summertime I would ride my bike with my rod and gear 7 miles to the local jetty and fish. That led to fishing for tuna and many other species as far south as 100 miles south of Cabo San Lucas.

At 16, I was introduced to trout fishing by a family friend and I was hooked immediately.  I love fishing a river, stream, orcreek.  After retiring, I travelled full time in a RV with my fishing equipment fishing in a number of states. Then in 2019, living in the hill country of Texas, I was introduced to fly fishing and tying, I was an immediate convert. I now travel and fly fish all over the world.

I have been fortunate and blessed to have had a number of wonderful mentors in my own life. I know what a difference they make. Part of my purpose in life is to give back and make a positive impact on kids thru fly fishing and discovering the beauty of nature.

I believe it’s better & easier to raise a healthy kid, than to fix them later in life. I consider an honor to be a mentor with the MayFly Project.

Jeff Bowen, Co-Lead Mentor

I am a native of Huntsville, AL and was fortunate enough to be introduced to fishing before being able to walk. I grew up fishing the Tennessee River lakes and as an adult have been lucky enough to flyfish all over the country in both fresh and saltwater. The best part of flyfishing for me has been sharing time on the water with my wife Susan who always catches the bigger fish. I look forward teaching the children who particpate in the Mayfly Project and also learning from them.

Jeremiah Russell, Mentor

A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jeremiah developed a love for fly fishing as a teenager, wading the streams of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He left his East Tennessee home to pursue higher education in other states around the southeast, until he settled in Alabama with his wife and two daughters, first as an assistant professor at a regional state university and now as a private school administrator in Huntsville. You can find him on local waters about every weekend. He is honored to serve as lead mentor for the Huntsville Mayfly Project and share the wonderful gift of fly fishing to area children in foster care!

Steve Ostaseski, Mentor
Steve grew up on Long Island in Oyster Bay, New York. He spent his formative years fishing Long Island, never anticipating arriving in Alabama fly fishing for bass. He has been a sailor, a horseman, a gambler, and a community planner. For Steve, fly fishing is a pastime, a relaxing activity, a pleasure, an exercise, and an interest to be shared. He is far from being an expert at anything but showing someone the elements of fly fishing to be enjoyed.
Conner Baker, Mentor
Connor’s interest in fly fishing started a few years back. After finding work in North Alabama, Connor needed a fun hobby. Fly fishing was the perfect outlet, combining his enjoyment of the outdoors with his love of exploring. From a military family, Connor has lived in several different states and a few different countries. He is a member of Tennessee Valley Fly Fishers in Huntsville, having held several different positions on the board of directors. Connor does not have a favorite species to target. He enjoys cold water, warm water and salt water fishing. Connor is honored to be a part of the Mayfly Project, and excited to teach what he has learned to others.
Susan Bowen, Mentor
I have lived in Huntsville for 30+ years, having previously lived in Michigan, Connecticut, Iowa and Arizona. I was introduced to flyfishing by my husband Jeff, who is also a mentor, over 20 years ago. Spending time in the outdoors and on the water is very important to me and a big part of my life. I look forward to sharing the joy and peace of being in the outdoors with the kids!
Adam Munger, Mentor
Adam grew up in Cullman, Alabama where his grandfather taught him to fish for bluegill and bass with traditional tackle. While attending college in Florence, Alabama in 2005 he started fly fishing with his brothers and since then has enjoyed exploring all the wild places fly fishing can take you, from Patagonia to the Bahamas to Washington state and every where in between. He loves seeing the joy and excitement when a new fisher catches their first fish and has seen first hand the calming, healing power that nature and fly fishing can have on an individual. He and his wife have four kids of their own and are passionate about empowering kids to find an outlet in the great outdoors.
Sarah Parvin, Mentor
A self proclaimed Bluegill Aficionado, Sarah has spent years studying & understanding bluegill. She enjoys being outdoors and fishing every chance she gets. Sarah looks forward to sharing her passion for panfish (really- all fish) with the kids (and anyone else who will listen!) She is honored to be a Mentor for The Huntsville Alabama, Mayfly Project. She is thrilled to work with the kids & be a source of encouragement for them to always pursue their dreams & never, ever give up. She looks forward to sharing her Big Bluegill stories with them and maybe even spending some time hunting for bugs in the outdoors.
Brandon Jackson, Mentor

Brandon Jackson is married to Mary Carole, and together they have two daughters. They make their home in central Alabama, where Brandon enjoys fishing for rainbow trout in the cold waters of the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, just below Lewis Smith Lake Dam. Since 2005, Brandon and his wife have owned and operated Riverside Fly Shop. He has a passion for teaching—whether it’s casting lessons, fly tying, or guiding clients toward a deeper love of fly fishing. Brandon is eager to bring his experience and commitment to service to benefit those involved in The Mayfly Project.

Casey Jonas, Mentor
I’m a systems engineer in the aerospace industry and I’ve been fly fishing for a little over a decade. It all started with a trip to Montana while on leave in 2013. I caught my first trout on the fly and haven’t touched my spinning rod since. I primarily fish for bluegill and bass, but I love fishing the saltwater for tarpon (any everything else) any chance I get. I love teaching kids to fly cast and sharing my passion for fly fishing with whomever will listen!
Heather Rigdill, Mentor

I was born and raised in Augusta, GA where I took up kayak fishing in 2017 and ultimately learned to fly fish.  Most of my time fly fishing has been spent in western NC and TN (GSMNP) fishing for trout.  In October 2023, I moved to Double Springs, AL which is my husband’s hometown.  I now very much enjoy wade fishing local creeks and rivers.  I am an all-around nature nerd and find the most joy being outdoors hiking, birdwatching, photography, camping and generally exploring.  I hope to inspire kids to love nature as much as I do and learn to reap the benefits of connecting with the outdoors.

Tyler Cambron, Mentor
Tyler was born and raised in North Alabama, but didn’t pick up fly fishing until a rod and reel were passed down to him after college. He quickly fell in love with the sport, learning as much as he could about fishing for bass and bream in the Huntsville area. Tyler has always had a heart for working with adoptive and foster children, and was all too excited to hear that it was possible to connect with kids from these backgrounds through his passion for fly fishing. He has been serving with the Huntsville Mayfly Project since it first started in 2023 and looks forward to continuing to instill a love for the outdoors in children through fly fishing.
